Choosing the Right Colors for Your Home

April 4, 2023

Behind the Scenes

Choosing the right colors for your home can be a challenge, but it’s also one of the most important steps in creating a cohesive look. To help you along, we’ve put together some tips for mixing and matching colors that will work well with each other:

Choose three main colors

The first thing to do when choosing interior colors is to pick out three main shades–one light, one medium and one dark–that you want in your space. You’ll use these as the base of your palette; they’ll provide contrast between each other while still working together as part of an overall design scheme. Even if you prefer to have a mostly neutral space with pops of color, it’s helpful to define what those accent colors will be so you can work them in strategically throughout the space.

Create complementary pairings

Once you have chosen all three base hues, start thinking about how they might go together. Good color combinations are often “complimentary pairs” that have opposing properties on the color wheel–for example blue/orange or purple/yellow. Alternately, for a calmer palette, think about what shades are slightly lighter or darker than your base shade as possible accents (like lavender and aubergine).

Balance warm and cool tones

Whether you love to be surrounded by lots of bold colors or you’re going for a more monochromatic look, you’ll want to make sure there’s some balance of warm and cool tones. That can be done through complimentary color combination like we described before, or by pairing cool colors like blue with warm textures like the basket and antique chest in the photo above.

Conclusion

Color is one of the most exciting and personal aspects of interior design. Different colors have different connotations for each person and will evoke different feelings, so whatever palette you’re drawn to will be a reflection of you.
